You relly need to get a timing light to really get spot on. What he says is right on the money, you only get about 20 degrees out of a009. Final timing is somewhere between 5-10 at idle and 28-32 at full advance. Then fine tune it by the way it sounds and drives. Using a timing light and aftermarket pulley I set it 30 degrees. I have had better results setting the timing with the engine warm, and having the rpm's above 3,000. ‘60 Kombi - '74 Bus - '79 Panel - '56 Beetle - '65 Beetleīoth Cusser and Joey are leading you in the right direction.įirst thing double check to make sure your points are right on. I found after doing this they (009) sit at 9 or 10 degrees BTDC at idle. Which means you have to rev it up until the distributor stops advancing. The 009 distributor should be timed to about 30 degrees TOTAL ADVANCE with a timing light. All manual transmission except for the Yukon. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. If the light is already lit, loosen then rotate the distributor clockwise a little clockwise, then slowly counter-clockwise as above until it lights, then tighten.ġ970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Now loosen the 10mm nut on the distributor clamp, and rotate the distributor SLOWLY counter-clockwise if the light is off, until the light goes on. Connect test light between coil negative terminal (the one with the green wire that goes to the distributor) and to engine metal ground. You would set the pulley to 7.5 degrees BTDC for #1 by rotating it clockwise. what am I doing wrong ? finally got the car running and just turned the dist. the light came on, but never went off It is a 1600 dp with 009 dist. I had the pulley set a 7 degrees past top dead center. Okay I was trying to set my timing using a tester light.
